Make Up for the Black Swan In Us All

by Fluffleberry on October 23, 2011

Whilst sitting in my lovely local beauty salon recently I stumbled across this campaign in Vogue. The Chanel look reminded me of the recent smash hit film Black Swan, staring Nathalie Portman. I love the look depicted in this photo. Ballet inspired but with a dark edge.

I love make up and all things theatrical and ballet has always been a particular passion of mine. Here are some of my very own ballet inspired looks…

DVF Jacket and black corsage from a selection at Fenwicks, Bond St, London

Like Black Swan my inspiration for these looks was Swan Lake. I love the story, it’s so romantic and hints at the good and evil within us all, like any fairy story worth it’s salt.

To create a balletic look yourself you’ll need black gel liner and a fine brush, a black eye pencil, a dark eyebrow pencil, a lighter shade of eye shadow in the colour of your choice, mascara and false eye lashes. Draw a dark line from the inside of your eye along the eye socket, then along the top and bottom lashes. Then create accentuated lash lines remembering that bigger is better. After all, this is a look that demands an audience at the Royal Opera House!

Fill in as desired with your shadow, then make your lashes bold and beautiful. Blacken the insides of your lashes with your pencil to make your lashes look full, then add mascara and your false lashes. Follow by darkening your brows and lightening the skin with whatever base products you prefer. I like to pair these intense eyes with nude lips but feel free to add red lipstick a la Chanel if you like.

Hair should be scraped back to complete the look, or obscured by a ballerina off duty turban and in each of my looks I have added a black swan inspired accessory but don’t over do it! A nod will do.

Make up I prefer to create the look… Gel Eyeliner in black and brushes by Bobbi Brown. Chanel Stylo Yeax Waterproof in black. Shu Uemura Eye Shadow in shades of silver. Clinique Superfine Brow Liner in black/brown. Lancome Hypnose Precious Cells mascara in black. False lashes are best from Shu Uemura and I prefer skin products such as powder and blusher from Laura Mercier.
